LIME GLOSSARY

Ca = calcium.
CaCO3 calcium carbonate = limestone.
Ca(OH)2 calcium hydroxide = slaked lime.
CaCO3 • MgCO3 calcium magnesium carbonate = dolomite.
CaO • MgO calcium magnesium oxide = burnt dolomite.
CaO calcium oxide = quicklime.
MgO magnesium oxide = refined burnt dolomite
Mg(OH)2 magnesium hydroxide = brucite.
Acidification = reduction of the pH of soil, waterways and lakes.
Active calcium oxide = free lime that can react chemically.
Agricultural lime = lime and dolomite products that are used in agriculture to raise the pH of the soil.
Building lime = binder for building mortar.
Calcination = heating material to release volatile constituents or change the crystal structure.
Calcite = crystalline mineral consisting of calcium carbonate.
Carbonate rock = type of rock consisting mainly of carbonates.
Coating pigment = pigment for coating paper (usually supplied as slurry. Mixture of very bright, clean particles, such as pulverised limestone or kaolin).
Dolomitic limestone = limestone that includes small amounts of the mineral dolomite.
Dolomite stone = type of rock which consists mainly of the mineral dolomite.
Filler = fine ground limestone or dolomite stone. Used as a filler in asphalt, plastics, paint and paper, for example.
Flotation = chemical/physical separation process carried out in a water slurry.
Flue gas cleaning = removal of environmentally harmful substances from flue gases.
Fossil = relic of an organism embedded in sediment.

  Garden lime = limestone or dolomite. Crushed or agglomerated for garden use.
Hydraulic lime = binder for plaster and mortar.
Lake liming = spreading of pulverised limestone used to combat acidification in lakes.
Lime-burned dolomite = calcinated dolomite stone with a carbon content similar to that of normal roast limestone.
Lime mud = precipitated calcium carbonate from the chemical recovery line in the sulphate pulp mill.
Lime mud kiln = rotary kiln for calcination of lime mud.
Limestone = type of rock that consists mainly of the mineral calcite.
Magnesium oxide = burnt dolomite refined to MgO. Used for purposes such as fertilizer, forage and in the pulp and paper industry.
Magnesium hydroxide = brucite (naturally occurring mineral) or synthetic (precipitated from sea water).
Metallurgical lime = quicklime. Slag-former and lining protector used in metallurgical processes.
Mg limestone = mechanical mixture of limestone and dolomite. Used as a liming agent in agriculture and forestry.
Mineral = homogeneous, inorganic substance formed by natural processes. Part of earth’s crust.
Neutralisation = elimination of excess H+ or OH- ions by adding base or acid.
PCC = Precipitated Calcium Carbonate.
Primary dolomite = carbonate rock formed in early geological age. Later converted by metamorphosis.
Quick lime, burnt lime = lime product consisting mainly of CaO. Produced from limestone from which carbon dioxide has been removed by heating.
Slurry = particles in suspension.
Sulphur absorber = binds sulphur in flue gases to form a solid phase that can be removed.

There is some confusion over the terminology used in the lime industry in terms of what is what and what the various products are used for. Here we have defined a number of terms in an effort to clarify the terminology.
