REACH INFORMATION

Registrations of SMA Mineral Group’s substances
in accordance with REACH

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals) is a new EU Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). One of the obligations under REACH is the registration of chemical substances.

SMA Mineral Group has pre-registered:

  • calcium oxide (burnt lime),
  • calcium dihydroxide (hydrated lime),
  • calcium magnesium oxide (dolime) and
  • magnesium hydroxide.

These substances will be registered by the first registration deadline December 1st 2010.

Minerals which occur in nature and are not chemically modified, such as calcium carbonate and dolomite, are exempted from registrations (Section 7 of Annex V). Magnesium oxide is also exempted from registration (Section 10 of Annex V), and therefore needs not to be registered.

  Communication along the supply chain
To ensure safe use of lime substances, manufacturers/importers need to develop generic exposure scenarios, which are to be combined with applicable risk management measures. For this purpose REACH Lime Consortium has developed a summary of known uses for lime substances, forming a basis for the development of the generic exposure scenarios. The complete list on uses of lime is available at IMA REACH Hub website »

Exposure scenarios and risk management measures are documented in Chemical Safety Report (CSR) and communicated via Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
