SMA Mineral’s products feature in EU-commended eco-project
SMA Mineral congratulates Skånefrö AB for winning the Best of the Best prize for the BIAGRO eco-project. The award is voted for by EU members states and the EU Commission. BIAGRO converts biomass residue such as seed shells, chaff and seed waste into a new fuel called Biagropellets™. SMA Mineral’s lime products are used in the production process.
The project was started in 2006 and focused on three key challenges: handling and transport of waste products, greenhouse gas emissions, and removing dependence on fossil fuels. A new plant was finished in December 2009. Skånefrö has also started its own energy company, BIAGRO Energy Österlen AB, to market the BIAGRO concept.
The successful project has received international acclaim. Anne-Louise Friedrichsen, acting deputy head of LIFE Environment says: “These solutions have the capability of making real changes in the world.” Christophe Bouvier at the UN’s UNEP organization says: “These are projects that can be included in the UN’s environment programme.”
SMA Mineral is naturally proud to see its lime products used in such a successful environmental project. This is a good example of the great versatility of lime and its natural ability to neutralize, filter and purify.
